#BLOG 2: iDEATION and iDEA selection

Brainstorming~~~

After deciding the chemical product which is water purifier that can contribute towards SDGs, we use MIRO to brainstorm ideas on design of our water purifier. In this session, we are opened to any ideas of innovation on design to generate more possibility of new ideas to work on.

This is my first time using this MIRO website and it was so fun that my team members come up with some special ideas. Moreover, we are able to see other teams' idea discussion so there is more interaction in our class. We did ensure everyone in our team participate in discussion and contribute any kind of ideas based on one's creativity while making sure we are able to finish brainstorming in our time limit which is around half an hour. We are required to brainstorm at least 25 ideas but my team managed to come up with 39 ideas!

LOOK at the photo at the right to see how creative we are!

Feasibility Screening~~~

Time flies.... It's now in week 5 and we are required to choose 5 ideas that is possible to make from the brainstorming ideas. The ideas that my team has chosen are reverse osmosis filter, rainwater harvesting with pH sensor and filter, treated twice boiled and filtered water, life straw and solar powered UV water purification system.

There is a form available which consist of 4 considerations which are budget, project timeline, technical feasibility and operational feasibility.

We need to fill in this form for each idea to filter out undesired project ideas that is not realistic based on these considerations. Completing this form was pretty easy as we were just following logic and ticked at the column of "Yes" or "No" because this is just a quick idea sieving process.

Engineering Decision Matrix~~~

Next, we used the COWS method to select which one is the best for us to work on by selecting 2 better ideas from the above sieving process. This method was shared by my lecturer in class, it was quite interesting as i have never heard of this before.

Option:

We have come up with 2 ideas which are the rain harvesting with pH sensor and filter as well as the solar panel UV water sterilization.

Criteria:

First, we have chosen 5 criteria below to determine which choice is better in these 5 aspects.

  1. Availability of parts

2. Ease of use

3. Complexity of construction

4. Green and sustainability

5. Effectiveness

Weighting:

As a chemical engineering student, we are still new to product design so the complexity of construction must be the most important criteria that we have to think about. After that, we arrange our weightage accordingly for each of the aspect based on the level of importance.

Score:

Finally, we can make comparison between these 2 ideas and put down the score for each idea based on the criteria chosen to determine the final product that we are most capable to work on.

In this section, all of my team members are very productive and we contribute our opinions and agree with the explanation which make more sense. It was a fun session engaging with my team members!
