"How The World's Largest Lesson Changed My Perspective: A Video Reflection"

Watch the video below and do you think 2030 is too ambitious?

  • Yes

  • No

Well, from my point of view, I believe it is not only realistic and reasonable but entirely achievable to reach these goals by 2030 as many parties worldwide are deeply concerned about these UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). For instance, initiatives such as food bank for hunger, vaccination campaigns for education, women's empowerment for gender equality, and microfinance for poverty, have demonstrated global efforts towards various goals.

Moreover, although the 17 goals do not cover everything for a sustainable development for mankind and earth because it does not explicitly mention every single aspect of certain issues, the SDGs offer a framework for addressing global issues and emphasizing the urgency from different perspectives, making all parties know an idea of where to start and have the awareness about these problems so that we can make significant progress towards a more sustainable and equitable world. In a nutshell, we should be optimistic and believe achieving these goals are not too ambitious to do our best to create a better world for our future generation.

Learning Journey @ National Museum of Singapore

Today, I'm so excited to share with you guys about my learning journey to the National Museum. Me and my classmate were given an opportunity to visit the plastic exhibition for FREE by our school!

"Plastic. Remaking Our World"

Join me as we embark on a journey of discovery, reflection, and action. Together, let's explore the profound impact of plastic on our planet and discover how we all can play a part in remaking the world for the better.

This is us separating the plastic pieces from a table of sand and gravels. It's actually a fun and therapeutic activity!

Through the exhibition visit, I found that almost everything in our daily lives contain plastic. For instance, microplastic can be ingested by a wide range of organism, potentially threatening humans' health through consuming food containing microplastic. Besides, plastic also cause environmental pollution because it is hard to degrade and it can contribute to issues in landfill. Additionally, plastic also increases the greenhouse emission and carbon footprint, causing global warming and climate change.

To effectively tackle the plastic problem, a circular plastic economy contribute a big step towards plastic-free future. Look at the photo taken at the exhibition to understand what circular economy is.

Also, let us take a look at waste treatment data in Europe to understand the initiatives that implemented by the governments to tackle plastic pollution and move towards a more sustainable world!

"Building a Better World:

Addressing CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION and

SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES together"

Why do my team choose both of this UNSDGs out of the 17 goals?

Nowadays, clean water is an extremely important element especially in Singapore because we do not have our own water resources due to limited space and resources. We need to be less relied on imported water, at the same time guaranteed that we have sufficient clean water resource. Moreover, hygiene sanitation facilities are also crucial to maintain health standard of Singapore resident.

Due to Singapore's rapid development and increasing population density, driven by a growing influx of foreign talent for education and work opportunities, it becomes imperative on this small island nation to have more comprehensive urban planning and housing allocation. This ensures that both local residents and international migrants have sufficient living space in Singapore while conserving and preserving the cultural heritage buildings as well as protecting the environment and natural resources.

"Water Purity in Action: Chemical Devices Shaping SDG 6 Initiatives"

water purifier

Have you ever wondered about the journey your tap water takes before it reaches your glass?

The process begins at a water source, which could be groundwater or surface water (lakes and rivers), and etc. However, water can pick up contaminants and pollutants as it travels through the environment. This is where water treatment come into play.

One of the major processes in water treatment is purification where sediments, bacteria, or undesired chemical substances is eliminated from the water to ensure it is safe to drink and use. Looking at the statistic below provided by the United Nations (UN) official website, we still have a room for improvement on water quality and sanitation due to the lack of management on water resources. Hence, it is notable that water purifier is one of the chemical devices that can make a large contribution in achieving SDG 6, which is the water and sanitation.
